Small Bathroom Solutions : Vanity

Tis the season for renovations and remodeling!  Tax time has come and with the return you can give your bathroom a little upgrade.

If you're dealing with a small bathroom and you want to give the illusion of more space without having to sacrifice storage here is a solution for you.

Try a vanity that has legs!  The legs on this vanity gives you an airy feeling that gives you the illusion of more space.  The baskets provide enough storage without it feeling closed off.

Antique table is an eye-catcher for this space!  This "vanity" adds the right amount of warmth to this all white bathroom.

Here's a great one that is small in width but airy and full of style at the same time!

Apothecary Sink

There are so many options to create a more livable, visually appealing and storage friendly bathroom.  Have fun in choosing the best vanity that represents your style!

Avoid This Decorating Mistake

Have you ever been caught up in that "cool" piece of furniture?  The one that looks good and would seem to be the compliment to your space.  You purchase on a whim and's not functional, practical and definitely not comfortable.

Here's some tips..
Think about how you use your space.
How do you function in it?
Would the piece your buying help with your lifestyle?
Can you sit on it and be relaxed and comfortable?

Will you love it for the long term or just for the week?  Buyers remorse?

Remember just because it is beautiful doesn't mean it's practical.

Make Your Mouth Water

Sometimes I have to get in touch with my Puerto Rican roots and make this recipe.  My family loves it and I get my girls involved with the process.  If you like pork I promise you after you try this you will love it!
Now I need to let you know that it's a bit time consuming but so worth it!  Try this for a Sunday dinner and impress your relatives with your chef skills!

Pernil de Cerdo al Horno
(Roasted Pork Shoulder)

10 garlic cloves ( I love garlic)
8 black peppercorns
2 tsp dried oregano
2 tbs canola oil
2 tbs cider vinegar
1 6-pound pork shoulder

Combine the first 6 ingredients in a mortar and crush.  Rub the meat well with this "adobo".

Let the meat rest overnight.  All those spices will settle all the way through the meat.

Next day preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Bake the pork shoulder in a roasting pan for 3 a 3.5 hrs.  I usually turn the meat every 30- 40 min to crisp on all sides.  Use meat thermometer to get to desired temp.  It should look like this when you're done..

Where I Go

Every day I have to have a moment where I can be alone and just think, pray or be creative.

Are you like that?

I am a mom of 3 awesome kids but how many of you know that even though you love them to pieces you have to sometimes just close the door and go to that place where you can be filled up again.

I come here.

It's my quiet place.  I come and read novels.. design magazines.. get my ideas for my clients (with a good cup of coffee in hand.  I love coffee! )

The best thing about this spot... is the view!

Creating your own oasis isn't hard..just surround yourself with things you love!  If you love books then create your own library with some shelves!  If you love plants..hang them or place them on tables in a grouping or solitary.  If you like to be cozy put a basket near a chair with throw blankets in them and perhaps a cute pillow.  Create an environment that gives you peace and can foster creativity.

Where do you go?

When I Think About..

When I think about design...

I think about who I am designing for..
I ask questions ...
I watch..
I listen

Designing is being in tune with your client
Bringing them as a part of the process and in the end..

Creating the story that they want told.

Design is a Story
An expression of who you are and what you want others to experience

I like to tell stories... Visual stories

What would you like to say through your space?

A Lounge For Many ( Process of Transformation )

I was honored to be asked to be a part of the design team for our church's women's conference.

During our meeting we were able to pick which areas we wanted to head up.. I decided to take the lounge area where we gathered to have our first brainstorming session.  The conference theme was "Go And Be" and immediately my brain started going with ideas.

What I took "Go And Be" to mean was "Grow And Be".  You are evolving and becoming who you truly are.. If you submit to the process.

So, with that inspiration I decided to go with an organic, ecclectic feel of the space.  Those coffee pics that you see in the space needed to be covered and I wanted to bring the theme of the conference in them.  Also, the wall with the blue needed to be covered inexpensively because of a small budget..which just caused me to be more creative.
Then there was the brown wall with the credenzas that needed a feature too!

My design business is a family affair.  My kids help me a lot in what I do and I commissioned my oldest daughter for this. I had her draw a quick sketch of what I wanted her to do on the wall in the space.

My youngest daughter and I made log stump coffee tables ..

We kept cost down by bringing in some of my furniture pieces and a friend of mine and great photographer, Marissa Siebert, from Hazel Eyes Photography, let me use her pieces too!  Thank God for good friends who understand design and get you out of a jam!

Here's my oldest daughter doing her art piece..chalkboard wall mural.  We covered the wall with a two sided bulletin board paper.  Do you remember the coffee pics? We covered them with plywood.  Thankful for Benjamin Carter for all his hard work.

Late night trying to get it done..

Putting in the final touches for the space..

Remember that dark brown wall with the credenzas?

I wanted a wall installation of flowers !  ( whisper.. Don't mind that lamp sitting there with absolutely no purpose). I want to personally say thank you to Ahndea May for bringing her silk flowers from her personal collection to make this into a reality for me.  She is an amazing stylist .. Check her out at
